Guide: Xbox 360 Internet Accessories and Xbox Live

Last updated 4th November 2010

This guide explains what accessories are required to connect a new Xbox 360 to the Internet. We also explain the different subscriptions for Microsoft's Xbox Live service.

Simple solution: Use a cable

All Xbox 360 consoles come with a standard 2 metre network cable. This can be plugged into a household's internet router to bring an Xbox 360 online.

There is nothing more complicated to do after that. The Xbox 360 should configure itself automatically and connect to the Internet.

In the event this doesn't happen, there is a lot of helpful information built into the Xbox 360 itself to help. Be sure to check the manual!

If you require a longer network cable, these are available from all good computer stores and many online retailers. Note that all network (called "Ethernet") cables are of the same quality; don't be fooled into paying extra for something that is gold-plated.

Wireless solution: Official Wireless Adapter

The new Xbox 360 S includes built-in wireless; there is no need to buy an extra accessory.

Explaining how to properly set up the wireless network is beyond the scope of this guide, but Microsoft include plenty of instructions with the Xbox 360. It's also possible to directly consult their support website for further help.

For older consoles, the Xbox 360 official wireless adapter allows the Xbox 360 to connect to any household's wireless router in the same way as a PC or another wireless device. The wireless adapter is not included with the Xbox 360 console, and must be bought separately.

Difference between Xbox LIVE Silver and Gold

Xbox Live has two different levels; Silver and Gold. A Silver subscription comes free with every Xbox 360 console, and allows downloading of new content such as demos, game updates, and even entire games.

The main disadvantage of a Silver subscription is that it does not allow you to play multiplayer games online. For that, a Gold subscription is required.

A Gold subscription does cost money. However, there are different ways of paying and some are cheaper than others.

The first method is to pay through the Xbox Live Marketplace, which is accessed through the Xbox 360 console. This, however, is usually the most expensive option.

The second option is to buy prepaid Xbox Live Gold Membership Cards, which are usually the cheapest option. These are available from retailers and credit 3 to 12 months of Gold membership to your Xbox Live account:

Online multiplayer gaming is the main benefit of Xbox Live Gold, and comes highly recimmended. Other, more fringe, benefits include movie streaming and (for those with Sky subscriptions) a built-in Sky Player.
